Former Honduran President Accuses Government of Assassination Plot
Former Honduran President Porfirio Lobo Sosa, whose term lasted from 2010 to 2014, accused the Honduran government of conspiring to assassinate him.
This accusation comes after Lobo proposed an investigation into current President Juan Orlando Hernández and other politicians following Tony Hernández’s trial. Last month, Tony Hernández, the brother of the president, was found guilty of charges including weapon possession, drug trafficking, and making a false statement. Other Honduran politicians were implicated during the trial.
Following these allegations, Lobo called for an investigation into these politicians, as well as Hernández’s resignation. He suspects that the government ordered to have him killed because of these statements. He said in a press conference that “a squadron of State security” received orders to execute him, and he said to AFP that these threats surged because he is standing against Hernández.
Government authorities denied these claims. They said because of the law protecting current and former government officials, Lobo “counts with all necessary security from the State for his personal protection.” Responding to Lobo, they also said that the government is willing to make modifications to its current security measures if necessary. Jair Meza, a representative of the National Police said, “There are no such things as squadrons of death, so we will be on the lookout for any threats against the former president.”
