LEADERSHIP

Shamitha kuppala (publisher)

Shamitha is a junior in the SFS studying Business and Global Affairs and pursuing the Sustainable Business Fellowship. She joined the Caravel as a copy editor in spring 2023 before becoming Copy Chief, Editor-in-Chief, and now Publisher. Her academic interests include environment (one of her happiest Caravel moments is starting Compass Planet), psychology, urban/global development, and education.

Maggie Yang (Deputy director of business development)

Maggie Yang is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service majoring in Regional Studies in Asia. She joined the Caravel as an Indo and Asia-Pacific staff writer in Fall 2023 and continued as Opinion section editor in Spring 2024. Her academic interests include East Asian politics, national security, and trade competition. 

Katherine hart (EDITOR-IN-CHIEF)

Katherine Hart is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service. She plans to major in international politics with a concentration in international security and minors in Russian and religion, ethics, and world affairs. Katherine joined the Caravel in 2023 as a writer for Eastern Europe and Russia before becoming Editor of Western Europe and Canada as well as Deputy Director of Special Events. She is excited to take on the role of Editor-in-Chief this year! Katherine is particularly interested in hybrid warfare, political theology, and security strategies. She is looking forward to a wonderful year with the Caravel!

Zoe sommer (Deputy Director of marketing)

Zoe Sommer is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics with a concentration in Security Studies. She is also pursuing a minor in Journalism. She joined the Caravel in her first semester as a writer for the Western Europe and Canada section and later became copy editor for WEUC. Her academic interests include international law, French history, and lawfare.  

Patrick kealey (EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR)

Patrick Kealey is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International History and minoring in Russian. He started writing for the Caravel in 2022, writing and editing the Eastern Europe and Russia section. His academic interests include intellectual and economic history as well as electoral politics around the world.

Blake Bertero (Deputy director of graphic design)

Blake Bertero is a junior in the SFS majoring in Culture and Politics with a concentration in immigration. They are from San Franscisco and outside of class, enjoys art, conversation, and photography

Editors

eleanor apps (COPY CHIEF)

Eleanor Apps is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics with a concentration in International Security. She joined the Caravel in fall 2023 as a copy editor before becoming Copy Chief in spring 2024. Her other academic interests include Indo-Pacific studies, Latin American studies, international history, and journalism.

Elizabeth Koenck (AFR)

Elizabeth Koenck is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service intending to major in International Politics. She joined the Caravel in her first semester at Georgetown as a writer for the Middle East and Central Asia Section and is currently the editor of the Africa section. Her academic interests include women’ rights, democracy, and political and economic development.

Zane nagel (afr)

Zane Nagel is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics. He joined the Caravel in Fall 2022 as a staff writer for the Africa section. His academic interests include researching non-state actors in the Sahel and Central Africa & reading about public transportation policy. Outside the classroom, you can find Zane exploring the DC Metro system or watching basketball.

Anna maloney (EER)

Anna Maloney is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service majoring in Science, Technology and International Affairs with a concentration in Security Studies. She joined the Caravel her freshman fall as a copy editor before expanding to additionally write for the Eastern Europe and Russia section. Her academic interests include Eurasian-US geopolitics, Russian, French, Mandarin, medicine, and international security. Outside of writing for the Caravel she enjoys running around the monuments, figure skating, and reading in the bioethics library.


Kuzma shepelev (EER)

Kuzma Shepelev is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service planning to major in International Politics. He joined the Caravel in his first semester at Georgetown as a writer for the Eastern Europe and Russia section before becoming its co-editor. His academic interests include democratization in former communist states, international law, and Russian culture.

Rishi dinesh (IAP)

Rishi Dinesh is a sophomore in the School of Foreign Service studying STIA with a concentration in Science, Technology, and Security. He wrote for the Indo-Asia-Pacific section in Fall 2023 before becoming its co-Editor in Spring 2024. He is interested in studying emerging security challenges such as artificial intelligence and climate change.

Kayla Yu (IAP)

Kayla Yu joined the Caravel in Fall 2023 writing for the IAP section, before becoming Compass Gender Section Editor in Spring 2024. Kayla’s academic interests include geopolitics and historical memory. Kayla joined the Caravel because it’s important to bring attention to underreported issues in international affairs!

Henry liu (LAC)

Henry Liu is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics with a concentration in International Security. He joined the Caravel as an Eastern Europe and Russia staff writer during his freshman year. He is currently the editor for the Latin America and the Caribbean section. Henry is from New York and has moved all over the U.S. but lives in Maryland now.

Christina pan (LAC)

Christina Pan is a sophomore in the College majoring in Government and English. She was a staff writer for IAP before becoming an editor for LAC. Her academic interests include the economic development of post-colonial nations, particularly how governance structures affect economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the region's integration into global trade and financial systems.

Rachel Rochford (WEC)

Rachel Rochford is a sophomore in the SFS. She joined the Caravel during her first semester as a writer for the Eastern Europe and Russia section and is now editor of the Western Europe and Canada section. Her academic interests include Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, foreign policy processes, and security.

Izzy simmons (Compass Money)

Izzy Simmons is a sophomore in the SFS and MSB studying Business and Global Affairs with a minor in Chinese. She joined the Caravel in Fall 2023 as a writer for the Eastern Europe and Russia section and became editor of Compass Money in Fall 2024.

 

Josephine balistreri (opinion)

Josephine Balistreri is a junior in the SFS majoring in International Political Economy with minors in Public Health and French.  She joined the Caravel as a copy editor and has served as the Opinion Editor since Spring 2024. Her other academic interests include international law, human rights, and global food accessibility.

Kathryn koss (MECA)

Kathryn Koss is a junior in the SFS majoring in Culture and Politics. She joined the Caravel in her second semester at Georgetown as a writer for Middle East and Central Asia and is currently the editor of the Middle East and Central Asia section.

 

Isak Dai (Compass elections)

Isak is a senior in the College majoring in Government and minoring in Chinese and Statistics. He has written for the Africa section and has been the editor of Compass Elections since the Spring of 2023. He loves to pore over crosstabs, stare at maps, and spend time with his dog, Bounty.

 

Gautami kunde (Compass gender)

Gautami Kunde is a junior in the School of Foreign Service studying International Politics with a concentration in Foreign Policy. She is also pursuing a minor in Global Development Studies. She joined the Caravel as a staff writer for the Compass Money and Indo-Asia Pacific sections. This semester, she is an Editor for the Compass Gender section. Her academic interests include global development, women as agents of development, and U.S.-China relations. 

 

Goran pope (MECA)

Goran Pope is a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences studying Government and History. He joined The Caravel as an Eastern Europe & Russia writer during his first semester at Georgetown, and is now also an editor for Middle East and Central Asia. His academic interests include great power geopolitics and the study of warfare through historical lenses. 

Thomas Clauson (compass world)

Thomas Clauson is a junior in the School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics, specializing in Foreign Policy and Policy Processes. Combined with a minor in Economics and a certification in Diplomatic Studies, he began writing for the Western Europe and Canada section in Fall 2023. His academic interests involve European affairs and geopolitics.

Parker han (compass futures)

Parker Han is a junior in the School of Foreign Service, majoring in Science, Technology, and International Affairs, with a concentration in Security Studies. He joined the Caravel in the fall of 2023 as a copy editor before Editing Compass Future in the fall of 2024. Alongside geopolitics, his writing interests include demography, medicine, and the history of technology.

Chloe Holter (WEC)

Chloe Holter is a sophomore in the School of Health majoring in Human Science with a minor in Global Health. She joined the Caravel as a writer for Western Europe and Canada in Spring 2024. Her academic interests include emergency medicine, oncology, and pathophysiology.

Andrew Swank (compass world)

Andrew is a junior in the School of Foreign Service, majoring in Regional and Comparative Studies with a minor in Statistics. He has been at the Caravel since his first semester at Georgetown, and he is currently the Compass World editor. He likes running, baking, playing soccer, and playing chess.
