Burkina Faso - Oct 31

The government of Burkina Faso collapsed on Thursday when demonstrators protested the President’s plans to stay in office after 27 years. Authorities in the country have imposed martial law and sealed the nation’s borders. However, after hours of increasingly violent protests, a government spokesperson announced that the bill to extend President Compaoré’s term had been dropped and President Compaoré later vowed to remain in office. If the protests are successful in ending Compaoré’s term, it will be the first time since Arab Spring that a popular movement has succeeded in removing an autocrat in sub-Saharan Africa.
