Union proposals for an increase in the minimum wage for Cambodia's 500,000 garment workers has been rejected by the Ministry of Labour. In December 2013, the minimum wage was set at $100 ($121 is the poverty wage), which prompted workers to protest in their thousands and have military police open fire to shut them down. The Cambodian garment industry accounts for 80% of its exports, and exported $5.5 million wroth of garments last year for brands such as H&M and Zara. Source: World Bulletin
