Chaos, Displacement, and the Way Forward

The attacks on Paris and Beirut caused many casualties and comparable levels of uncertainty. Nations in which terrorist attacks have occurred are struggling to detect plans for and prevent the next mass murder or suicide bombing. In addition, the refugee crisis is worsening as fears of terrorism made states reluctant to bear the brunt of immigration. At the same time, Russia’s involvement in Syria has brought back Cold War era suspicions in the United States.

While The Anchor seeks to address these recent developments, we have done so through lenses beyond that of security.

For example, we examined environmental issues that are often inseparable from human rights. The European refugee crisis led to protests from climate activists. They demand measures to make burgeoning refugee communities environmentally sustainable. Indeed, environmentally friendly residences for refugees could redefine the relationship between refugee communities and host nations. Conversations surrounding these issues have to start somewhere, and fast.
