The European Union’s counter-terrorism co-ordinator, Gilles de Kerchove, is asking internet and telecommunication companies to hand over encryption keys to police and spy agencies in order to better monitor terrorism. De Kerchove believes governments should be permitted to monitor potential suspects, especially in light of increases in encryption technologies following Edward Snowden’s leak of NSA data.  Both the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister David Cameron and President Obama strongly support this proposal, but critics fear that it not only encroaches on rights to data protection and privacy but also endangers citizens’ security.
