Investigations Reach Peruvian President

In Peru, President Ollanta Humala has become embroiled in the allegations surrounding the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. With investigations ongoing in Brazil, the case now turns towards the Peruvian president.  These accusations implicate him in the bribery and corruption case known as Lava Jato. In looking at Odebrecht’s spreadsheets, a questionable “Special Italian Program” is particularly concerning. However, other aspects have been more alarming to investigators, including an entry with the date of July 31, 2012 and labeled as “Project OH.” Assigned to the project is roughly $3 million in funds. Suggesting that the title indicates the initials of the Peruvian leader, speculation in recent days has led to a series of investigations into Humala’s background.

Despite these allegations, the administration, namely President Humala, has denied any relationship with Odebrecht. In a brief public statement, the President of the Council of Ministries reported that Humala summoned the Ambassador of Brazil in Lima in order to formally reject these allegations. Additionally, at the meeting, the head of State requested additional information on the case.

It should be noted, however, that Odebrecht and other authorities have elaborated upon the recent claims, particularly as they relate to Ollanta Humala. Although the investigation raises an extensive list of questions, it is only that—an investigation. These inquiries have not yet resulted in an indictment but rather represent the preliminary assessment of federal authorities.

Going forward, the case may affect Peru’s political landscape. In the face of the scandal, the allegations have caused a wave of skepticism and distrust that will only be settled when investigations are concluded.
