Italy - Feb 3

In his first speech since being sworn into office Tuesday morning, new Italian President Sergio Mattarella promised to fight corruption and organized crime.  A former judge, Mattarella told Parliament that tackling these issues is among his top priorities, in addition to promises that he will tackle the economic crisis and work towards electoral reform. A largely symbolic role, though bestowed with the power to appoint a prime minister, the 73-year-old president will serve a seven year term.
