Japan - Feb 17

The Japanese government is trying to revise its election laws to lower the voting age from 20 to 18 during the current Diet session. Prime Minister Abe has stated that it would be meaningful to take the opinions of the young into account. Considering the fact that the voting age of most countries is 18, the government decided that Japan should accord to this international norm. If the Diet approves the revisions, they will take effect from the next Upper House election in summer 2016, and will subsequently be applied to local elections.
