Kenya - June 16th, 2014
The Kenyan Red Cross declared a death toll of 48 on the Monday after a Sunday night shooting by eight gunmen in Mpeketoni. Al Shabaab has taken responsibility for the attack and locals stated that a number of the attackers were speaking Somali. The shooting affected the police station, two hotels, a bank, and a gas station. Kenya has been suffering attacks from Al Shabaab militants since 2011 when the government deployed troops to combat the militants within Somalia. This attack indicates an increase in the violence and validates recent travel advisories that have gone into effect.
