Kenya - Mar 3
At a ceremony in Nairobi National Park, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered over 15 tons of illegally yielded ivory to be set on fire. This was part of an ongoing effort of the East African nation which previously pledged to stop illegal ivory poaching and to destroy its own stockpile of ivory, which is estimated to be about 115 tons. Ivory poaching has been outlawed for twenty-five yeas in Kenya, yet the illegal ivory trade and poaching fields have severely threatened elephant populations, with conservationists warning that within a few years elephants could be wiped out entirely in some parts of Africa. The 15 tons set on fire had an estimated market value of $30 million. Source: BBC Africa
