Somalia - June 14th, 2014

Thousands of children in Somalia are being infected with a highly contagious strain of measles. In the southern and central regions of the country that are impacted by fighting between the African Union and al-Shabab, only 15% of children are being immunized. Aid agencies are struggling to raise the $9 million that is needed for an effective immunization campaign. This year, rates of infection in the country are four times higher. The measles outbreak only adds to the damage of famine that has caused death rates to skyrocket-- one out of five children in the Horn dies before turning 5.
