Vowing to protect his country’s sovereignty, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy declared the referendum on Catalan independence, scheduled for November 9, unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court then voted to suspend the referendum while they decide whether the vote is unconstitutional—a process that could take up to five months.
