Tanzania - Mar 3

In January the government of Tanzania banned witchdoctors in an effort to curb the killing of albinos. Albinism is particularly prevalent in Tanzania, with one in 1,400 being affected, as opposed to one in 20,000 in Western nations. Witchdoctors seek albino body parts and will pay up to $75,000 for a full set of albino body parts. The recent mutilation of a baby albino boy and a case of a missing albino girl has shocked the nation. The President of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete stated that he is “shocked and saddened at the sudden upsurge these macabre killings...” and that the nation must work with albino leaders to rid the “nation of this shame.” Source: BBC Africa
