With the renewal of fighting in Donetsk and Luhansk, a successful diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine seems unlikely at this point in time.  Over the past several days rebel forces have successfully consolidated their hold around Debaltseve and established a pocket encircling several thousand Ukrainian government troops.  The Ukrainian government maintains that the battle for the "pocket" is still ongoing and that a counteroffensive on the southern front of the conflict will help to relieve pressure off of its troops in Debaltseve.
