European Union – Mar 17

Europol, the EU police agency, has established a maritime intelligence unit called JOT (Joint Operational Team) Mare to break human-trafficking gangs that transport migrants across the Mediterranean Sea.  According to EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos, the EU border agency Frontex is currently monitoring several non–EU ports and vessels which might be used for smuggling migrants.  The JOT Mare’s main job is intelligence collection and analysis to help national police operations.
