India - Sept 27

In an eighteen-year old corruption case, Jaya Jayalithaa, the chief minister of India's Tamil Nadu region, was convicted of "amassing" $8.7 million. The first ever corruption conviction of a ruling chief minister, the conviction is regarded as a step away from India's history of leniency towards politicians. Although Jayalalithaa has been asked to resign, critics believe she will make a comeback due to her popularity. She has appealed the case. Source: Deccan Chronicle, indiatoday, Reuters
