Japan - Sept 27
Mt. Ontake, a central Japan volcano and a popular climbing destination, erupted on Saturday September 27th. 36 people are reported to be killed and about 70 people were injured. Due to toxic gases and ashes, firefighters and Self-Defense Forces personnel had to halt the rescue and search of trapped climbers on Monday afternoon. Mt. Ontake has not had a fatal eruption in modern times. Source: Japan Times
