Indonesia will withdraw a plan that would force foreign workers to take local language proficiency exams after protests from investors, who decried the plan as protectionist. According to Vice President Jusuf Kalla, the regulation intended to protect low-skilled workers ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) integration this year, but clearly its potential impact on investment is more salient to the Indonesian government, who plans on relying on high investment to spur the country’s economy growth.
