Italy - Apr 7
The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that an attack by Italian police against a protester at the 2001 G* summit in Genoa will be classified as torture. The victim, Arnaldo Cestaro, denies that he resisted police but was still beaten, and the court ruled that Italy must pay Cestaro $49,000 in damages. The 2001 summit involved several violent clashes between anti-globalization protesters and police, and Italy is currently working to clarify the parameters and legal status of criminalized torture.
