Maldives - April 7

Jailed opposition leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed, who had been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment last month on terrorism charges, has announced an international legal team including Ben Emmerson, former UN rights chief on counter-terrorism and human rights. President Abdullah Yameen has continued to face the opposition’s daily protests thus far. Since Nasheed’s conviction, former defense minister Mohamed Nazim and MP Ahmed Nazim have been sentenced for smuggling weapons and corruption charges, respectively.
