The EU has begun maritime patrols along the Mediterranean Sea due to large amounts of migrants coming into Italy from North Africa. This operation, Operation Triton, will only have a third of the budget of that Italy’s Mare Nostrum operation had, begun in 2013 after more than 300 migrants drowned of the coast of an Italian island. According to the European Commission, 21 EU member states have pledged to participate. Source: BBC, Reuters
