In light of sluggish Russian projected growth and international sanctions on Moscow, Kazakh economic integration with the bear on January 1st could be a poor choice. Kazakhstan has already felt the impact of sanctions; the first half of this year has seen a 21 percent decline in exports to Russia. And, a World Bank study found that joining the EEU would increase Kazakh tariffs outside the Union, undermining the landlocked country’s “multi-vector” foreign policy. Source: Eurasianet
