Malaysia - April 8

Under the proposed Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Bill for this year, human traffickers may be forced to pay compensation to their victims, in addition to being subject to civil action. The proposed amendment also introduces a new section that empowers the Council for Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants to grant any trafficked person permission to move and work freely during the period of the protection order. A United Nations expert visit to Malaysia on March 1 involved the advocacy of a new protection system for migrant workers in Malaysia.
