Vietnam - April 8

Lawmakers are discussing the abolishment of the death penalty for several crime categories and the revision of criteria for commuting capital punishment sentences to life imprisonment. The National Assembly Standing Committee is currently reviewing provisions of the revised Penal Code, and revisions are intended to make the Code more transparent and effective. Most members agreed with the Government proposal to restrict death penalties. The session will close this coming Friday.
