In the fifteenth century, Portugal forced thousands of Sephardic Jews to either convert to Christianity or flee the country.  As a result, the Portuguese Jewish community, which used to number in the ten thousands, has now shrunk to about a thousand.  This week, however, the Portuguese Cabinet approved a law that will allow those who are descendants of Sephardic Jews and can demonstrate a strong link to Portugal to apply for Portuguese citizenship.
