Somalia - Oct 24
The United Nations Security Council authorized the inspection of boats suspected to be carrying illegal weapons and charcoal to and from Somalia this past Friday using “’all necessary measures.’” Of the 15 countries on the council, 13 voted in favor of the resolution, with Russia and Jordan abstaining due to concerns over the effectiveness and the potential unintended results of the resolution. This resolution follows a 1992 arms embargo on Somalia and other U.N. sanctions. Coal is key in this new resolution because profits from the illegal coal trade is said to fund the terrorist group Al-Shabaab. The United Nations Security Council hopes that this new resolution will help to wound the terrorist group by cutting off its funding. Source: Reuters
