Syria - Oct 30

In a sign that airstrikes alone are insufficient in defeating the Islamic State, more than 1,000 foreign fighters are streaming into Syria each month, asserts US intelligence. Despite 600 airstrikes that have killed between 400 and 500 Islamic State members, the flow of fighters into Syria has remained constant. The remarkable pace eclipses that of any comparable conflict in recent decades and has been attributed to IS’ sophisticated recruitment campaigns and poor border control. More than 2,000 fighters have come from Europe, carrying passports that would enable them to travel relatively freely in Western countries. In response, Britain, France, Germany and other European nations have taken more aggressive measures including the seizure of passports, new antiterrorism measures, and the targeting of potential suspects with increased surveillance and arrests.
