China - Sept 30

China celebrated its first ever Martyr Day on September 30. Martyr Day is a newly established national holiday that honors the country's national heroes who were killed fighting for China's independence and prosperity. Soldiers, early communist leaders, revolutionaries, and ordinary citizens make up the 20 million martyrs China is estimated to have. The goal of Martyr Day is to form a collective memory and emphasize what deeds are valued in the country. Source: Xinhuanet
