For the first time in the Kashmir's history, the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which opposes Kashmir's autonomy, will hold a high-ranking position in the majority Muslim province. Together with the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP), which is devoted to Kashmir's self-rule, a BJP representative will hold the seat of deputy minister while a PDP representative will be chief minister.
